More artists join the Hoods for the first annual North West Festival.

Having recently announced the first annual North West Festival, set to take over the heart of the Pilbara Region, Port Hedland, Sunset Events are thrilled to be adding two amazing bands to the bill. Joining the Hilltop Hoods at the Port Hedland Turf Club on Saturday 18th August are The Living End and The Cat Empire.

The Living End are quite simply one of Australia’s greatest living rock bands. The infamous trio of Chris Cheney, Scott Owen and Andy Strachan (who replaced Travis Dempsey in 2002) have released six classic albums, two of which have gone to number 1 on the ARIA charts. They have won countless awards including ARIA’s, APRA’s and Jack’s and hold the record for the most consecutive entries in triple j’s Hottest 100, making the cut every year from 1997 – 2006.

After emerging out of Melbourne’s rockabilly scene in 1994, The Living End were an instant sensation. Their first major single, the double A-Side of “Prisoner of Society” and “Second Solution” became the biggest selling Australian single of the 1990′s. It spent an amazing 69 weeks in the charts and both songs are now considered Australian classics up there with tracks AC/DC’s “Long Way To The Top” and Cold Chisel’s “Flame Trees”.

The trio then went on to release album after album of solid rockabilly based punk rock, spawning hits like “Roll On”, “Who’s Gonna Save Us”, “What’s On Your Radio”, “White Noise” and their latest anthemic track “The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating”. They are festival veterans and The Living End now take their place at the top of the pile – as one of the most dynamic and hardworking bands in Australian live music history.

In an industry where few bands survive beyond the first album, The Cat Empire have consolidated themselves as a world class touring band over the past decade. This is a rare success story, which shows that a combination of hard work, great songs, a good vibe, a genuine vision, and a little bit of luck go a long way.

While it looked as though The Cat Empire had come out of nowhere, it was very much the determination and design of front man Felix Riebl which made this band a solid reality on the Australian Music scene with the release of their debut album back in 2003. Felix met a few of the early recruits (Ollie, Will and Ryan) in a youth jazz project and then set about recruiting front man/trumpeter Harry Angus, followed by DJ Jamshid Khadiwala. The result was a truly unique sound of ska, jazz, funk and rock fused together with some sultry Latin undertones.

Teeing off with their breakout hit, the highly infectious “Hello”, the band has now sold over three quarters of a million albums and dvds in all corners of the world. They have headlined global festivals, won ARIAs, played on Letterman and Leno, toured many times over to ever increasing international audiences, and will without doubt, bring plenty of party vibes to Port Hedland.

Festival Info

It's the start of a beautiful relationship.

As we proudly announced today, we are in the process of delivering the inaugural North West Festival this August, on Saturday the 18th to be precise.

We are REALLLLLY excited about it! Hilltop Hoods will put on one hell of a show, and we’ve got some more names to announce in the coming weeks!

In recent weeks a few of us Sunset types have been up to Port Hedland to meet the fine people of the town and talk bwisness. Yep, bwisness.

And we took some rather lovely snaps around the town that we thought we’d share with you.

Storm was a-brewin’..

Which nearly turned into this…

But we made it out ok. As did the majority of the Pilbara region! PHEW!

Here’s some driving action from Port Hedland to Karratha (N.B. Safely pulled over at the time of snapping).

All in all, we’re looking forward to getting further acquainted with Port Hedland and the stunning Pilbara Region.

It’s going to be some fun!

Team Sunset.

This will be only the 3rd time Prince has toured Australia. He last performed here in 2003. Prolific, influential and innovative, Prince is one of the most private of all music super stars. He lets his music speak for itself – and it does.

Singles such as Purple Rain, 1999, Controversy, When Doves Cry, Diamonds and Pearls, Nothing Compares 2 U, Kiss, Little Red Corvette, Cream and Raspberry Beret are songs deeply etched into the hearts of a generation and seamlessly tie together pop, funk, folk, and rock.

His recorded catalogue is vast, diverse and massively popular. He has sold over one-hundred million albums, with ten platinum albums and over thirty top ten singles to his credit. From thirty-three nominations he has won seven Grammy Awards, and his songs for movies have earned him a Golden Globe (The Song of the Heart from Happy Feet) and an Academy Award (Purple Rain).

While his second album Prince went platinum, but it was the album 1999 that was the real breakthrough for Prince. It sold over three million albums.

This success, however, was nothing compared to the success of Purple Rain. This album made him a superstar, selling over ten million copies in the US alone and topping the charts for a phenomenal twenty-four weeks.

Since then he has boldly experimented with sounds and styles, writing and producing with great diversity and ambition. He has written hits for and mentored the careers of other artists, and founded his own recording studio and label.

But what propels him into the upper echelons of greatness – and Rolling Stone include him in its list of the Greatest Artists of All Time – are his legendary stage shows. His concerts are flamboyant and thrilling, and he matches brilliant musicianship with cutting edge presentation.

Prince will be bring his huge full scale arena production to Australia which will include ground breaking technology in a complete 360 degree stage (in the round).

Notoriously reclusive and reserved in media interviews, Prince takes to the stage with sex-appeal and charisma that can reach the far corners of the even the largest arena.

From moments of great intimacy to exuberant solos, he is a live performer rare in his ability to hold each and every member of the audience enthralled.

We have tickets starting from only $99 so that everyone can see this legendary superstar performer, Prince” – Garry Van Egmond.

This tour of Australia is destined to be one of the greatest concert events in years – the Prince’s multiple concerts at Madison Square Garden sold out in 30 minutes, and his 21 night stand at the 20,000 seat O2 Arena in London set new box office records.

Note – there is no public pre sale.

All tickets on sale – Monday 16 April at 9am – Ticketek.

The tour is presented by Van Egmond Group and Chugg Entertainment.

With West Coast Blues 'n' Roots coming up in under a month, we've been back at HQ getting prepped, singing tunes and breaking mirrors while doing so.

So we’ve been a little MIA blog wise lately (not M.I.A, although we wish we were her) but the point is that we’re back. We’ve been busy winding up Laneway which was AMAZING. We were sold out and we want to thank you all by giving each of you (virtual) bear hugs!

With West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots coming up in under a month, we’ve been back at HQ getting prepped, singing tunes and breaking mirrors while doing so.

If any of you remember, we lost our beloved coffee machine at Blues ‘n’ Roots last year. Coming up to the 1st anniversary of our loss, we have come up with our most memorable moments from BnR 2011 in honour of it. Yes, we do a lot of these types of posts.

1. Ahh, the mystery of our missing coffee machine. Last seen in Bob Dylan’s winnebago – where did it go? Gumtree, maybe? One year on and we’re finally coming to terms with it being gone forever.

2. Grace Jones’ legs/hula hooping skills. VAVAVOOM. If all of us had legs like those… N.B. We should probably stop eating cheese, huh?

3. The mad strumming skills of Rodrigo Y Gabriela. We’d like to get our hands on those calluses. Wait, what?

4. Elvis Costello epic singalongs. It sounded pretty magical!

5. Watching Michael Franti pull up the kids on stage for singing and dancing times. Pretty pretty cool. And not nearly as Wiggle-esque as it sounds.

And with 3 weeks to go this Sunday, we cannot wait for Blues ‘n’ Roots 2012. We’ve got Fogerty busting out CCR hits for over 2 hours, we’ve got Crosby, Stills & Nash, we’ve got The Pogues (yep, with Shane MacGowan), we’ve got The Specials, My Morning Jacket, Buddy Guy, Trombone Shorty, we’ve got heaps more but we’re running out of breath!

Phew-weeee.

It’s our 9th Blues ‘n’ Roots and you know what they say – 9th times’ a charm. Ok, we say that. No one else does.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

More info here if you fancy it!

Love,

Team Sunset xx

West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots adds final touches to the line up.

With just under 5 weeks to go until the 9th annual West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots settles in to Fremantle Park, we are pleased to announce the final finishing touches to the bill. Joining the already stellar line up of John Fogerty (playing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Cosmo’s Factory in full and other CCR hits), Crosby Stills & Nash, The Pogues, The Specials, Buddy Guy, My Morning Jacket, Blitzen Trapper and more are Gin Wigmore (NZ), The Sheepdogs (CAN), and local up and comers, Ruby Boots.

Gin Wigmore really gets it. She gets what it is to think you have it all, and lose what you loved the most. She gets what it feels like to be heartbroken, far from your family, in a self-imposed exile. The 26 year old singer-songwriter has taken her life’s ups and downs, held them up to the light, and crafted songs which speak to a universal experience of fear, hope, love and joy.

Gin, whose sound is something of a mash up of Neil Young, Blondie and Macy Gray has been performing and writing since the ripe age of 12 and had penned an album’s worth of songs by her 15th birthday. Soon after her first recording session in 2002, the Wigmore family was dealt a tragic blow: Gin’s father died of cancer. Gin stopped writing and playing altogether and spent some time abroad. Back home, she wrote a tribute song to her father called “Hallelujah” and on a whim her sister entered Gin’s song in the US-based International Songwriting Competition. She won both the Teen and Grand Prizes, making her the youngest and only unsigned Grand Prize winner in the history of the competition.

Gin’s latest album Gravel & Wine was released September 2011 and was received with open arms. Make sure you experience the magical voice and soul of Gin Wigmore at Fremantle Park this April.

Emerging from a small town in Canada (and personally handpicked by our headliner John Fogerty no less), The Sheepdog’s latest EP Five Easy Pieces portrays the sounds of decades past. Influences like Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead are coupled with a mix of modern rock sensibilities resulting in their signature sound.

Over the years, The Sheepdogs have trekked across Canada in their beaten-down van, but now they are ready to capitalize on the opportunity. “It is now about hitting the road, playing some kick-ass shows, and getting ready to impress people with a new record” states lead singer Ewan Currie.

That full-length, expected some time this year, will surely cement the fact that, though they’ve had a bit of luck on their side, the only thing responsible for The Sheepdogs’ recent slew of success is the sweat they’ve left onstage and the sweet, sticky throwback tunes that are sure to impress at West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots.

There is no mistaking that Ruby Boots are a “band”. They look like a band, play like a band and the chemistry between them is more like glue. With electric and acoustic guitars, banjo, mandolin, violin, washboard, keys, bass, drums and vocal harmonies some bands would look crowded. Ruby Boots just look downright good and they play downright excellent music.

While there’s something of a resurgence in traditional roots genre, Ruby Boots are making it their own. Chain-gang chants and blues guitar through to western-swing and honky tonk piano, then across to folk-country and back around again, it’s all there and it sounds really fresh. Be sure to kick start your festival experience with this incredible local talent.

There’s still one spot left!

As we do each year, we’re proud to hold a coveted spot on our amazing West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots line up for our Breakthrough to Blues ‘n’ Roots competition. Supporting burgeoning talent from WA’s booming live music scene, the competition encourages local, unsigned bands to apply via the Sonicbids website.

Over the coming weeks we’ll listen to each and every submission and face the challenging task of narrowing it down to a handful of finalists. These deserving few will take to the stage at Mojo’s Fremantle on Wednesday 21st March and our panel of industry judges will determine one winner, who will open the stage at Fremantle Park on Sunday 1st April.

Artists are encouraged to upload their electronic press kits and apply for the competition via http://www.sonicbids.com/Opportunity/OpportunityView.aspx?opportunity_id=105656.

Groovin’ the Moo (GTM) regrets to announce Chiddy Bang will no longer be part of the GTM 2012 National tour. Unfortunately they have chosen to cancel their Australian commitments in order to focus on new TV and radio promotional opportunities for their upcoming album in the USA.

This decision is very disappointing and totally out of our control. However GTM is very pleased to announce that J Award Unearthed Artist of the Year winners Ball Park Music will be joining the GTM tour.

Dynamos Ball Park Music are masters of the indie-pop-sunny melody and this GTM, we school of fish will be reeled in by their catchiest of hooks. The band, no doubt big fans of Pavement and Weezer, recently had two entries in triple j’s Hottest 100 with the playful ‘It’s Nice to Be Alive’ and ‘All I Want is You’ appearing at #31 and #38 respectively. Their record “Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs” also received nominations for Album of the Year in both triple j’s J Awards and Rolling Stone Awards, and was impressively voted the 10th Best Album of 2011 in triple j’s listener poll.

GTM promoter Stephen Halpin commented on the circumstances today, “To replace an act on the festival at this late stage is very difficult, so we are extremely grateful to have an act of the caliber of Ball Park Music join the tour at such short notice. Yes its annoying that Chiddy Bang have chosen to cancel but Ball Park Music are a fantastic live act and deserve all their current success.”

Ball Park Music will be joining 360, Adrian Lux (SWE), Andrew W.K One-Man-Party Tour (USA), Beni, Big Scary, Bluejuice, City and Colour (CAN), Digitalism (GER), The Getaway Plan, Gold Fields, Hermitude, Hilltop Hoods, Kaiser Chiefs (UK), Kimbra, The Maccabees (UK), Matt Corby, Muscles, Mutemath (USA), Naysayer & Gilsun, Parkway Drive, Public Enemy (USA), Purple Sneakers DJs, San Cisco and Wavves (USA) as part of the GTM tribe committed to touring regional Australia.

GTM appreciates that there may be people who have purchased tickets especially to see Chiddy Bang. Refunds will be available from 9am ADST Monday 27 February until 5pm ADST on Friday 2 March through MOSHTIX (1300 438 849) or ticketsupport@moshtix.com.au.

POWER TO THE TRIBE OF GROOVIN THE MOO 2012 – LET US BRING THE NOISE!

BENDIGO | TOWNSVILLE | MAITLAND | CANBERRA | BUNBURY |

Presented nationally by Cattleyard Promotions and Co-Presented in Bunbury by Sunset Events. Supported nationally by triple j, Channel [V], Faster Louder, inthemix, Streetpress Australia & triple j Magazine

Rich feathers…precious stones. The Groovin’ the Moo (GTM) cosmogram returns in 2012. With the milestone of a record ten international Artists alongside local essentials coming together for Australia’s only touring regional event, the scene has been set for a ritual of musical and communal expression. From City and Colour, Kaiser Chiefs to Public Enemy and more, this will be one fun techni-colour spectrum of artist-all-sorts handpicked for GTM fans to enjoy this May.

Now in its eighth percussive year, the GTM tribe of 75,000 strong across the land will hold up the sky for another gathering culminating in a happiness explosion of epic proportions. Sporting head dress and holding talisman, White Eagle Desert Dweller aka Stephen Halpin (GTM Promoter, Cattleyard Promotions) relayed in anticipation, “I’m really excited about this lineup. So many fresh locals, festival favourites and breaking internationals to keep the outdoor stages rocking and the Moolin Rouge banging. Looking forward to checking out Chiddy Bang, plus Mutemath and The Maccabees who are making their first tours of Australia. I’m sure everyone will give them a friendly GTM welcome.”

With a history of sell-out events, in 2012 the five shows will again be ready to cater for all ages, as well as being licensed (recommend 16+). GTM is excited. In exchange for a single joyous day with its much missed sidekicks, a sacrifice of rich musical and culinary offerings will be put forth to satiate the clan’s eyes, ears and bellies. Twenty five artists will be presented ceremoniously on a double outdoor stage and by the voodoo glow of the Moolin Rouge Big Top tent before those who have astral plane travelled, caught magic carpet train or bus from interstate, country town, regional centre and city. For those who are ready, with a ticket price at under $100 (or two pineapples, rather), cometh with your tribe. It’s time to partake in a day where we give, receive, beam and shake.
