Sunset Events are thrilled to announce the return of the North West Festival for 2013. The inaugural event, launched in August last year was deemed a huge success with positive feedback pouring in from attendees, media, stakeholders, stallholders and artists alike.

We’re very pleased to be returning to the Port Hedland Turf Club, again offering an awesome day of fun times, free camping facilities and an absolutely HUGE line up. So lock out the diaries for Saturday 24th August and get ready for these incredible artists to blast into town.

We’re incredibly excited and proud to be bringing a line up of this calibre to the Pilbara. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2013 line up is here;

Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, 360, Grinspoon, The Black Seeds (NZ), Bluejuice, Abbe May and Vance Joy.

Now it’s time to get to know your North West Festival 2013 artists.

Often dubbed Australia’s unofficial poet laureate, or even the greatest songwriter our fair land has managed to produce, there are a few things about Paul Kelly that are absolutely indisputable. For one; his catalogue of work, amassed over thirty years in the music industry, will never be paralleled. Secondly; his latest record, the sublime song cycle of Spring and Fall is one of the finest of his career and proves that time and experience is only improving his considerable skills. Lastly, and most importantly for our festival in the great North West, is the fact that Paul Kelly as a live experience is as strong and unforgettable as any act doing the rounds today. It only takes one look at last year’s documentary Stories of Me, the latest film to make Kelly it’s subject, to see the crowds clapping along, eyes welled up with happiness and adoration, singing along with the likes of To Her Door, How To Make Gravy, Dumb Things or From St Kilda To Kings Cross. Always a man with an affinity for the people of regional Australia whilst always keeping his finger on the pulse of the hustle and bustle of the city, Paul Kelly is the perfect act for the North West Festival audience.

Performing songs from his new album as well as classic hits, and with a backing band featuring his nephew (and latest partner in crime) Dan, seeing Paul Kelly live is truly the quintessential Australian music experience.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 8 years since Bernard Fanning first released his now classic debut album Tea and Sympathy, and nearly 3 since his beloved outfit Powderfinger was laid to rest for good with their final record Golden Rule. It was with this absence in mind that we lent our ears to Fanning’s newest solo single Battleships and man, ain’t it great to have that voice back? Taken from his latest album Departures, an effort recorded in LA with super producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Raconteurs, My Morning Jacket, Augie March) with help from a backing band used to working with the likes of Sting, Beck, Regina Spektor and John Mayer, Fanning has cemented a reputation that needed no fixing up whatsoever. His work with “the Finger”, for whom he voiced some of the more unforgettable Australian tracks of the last two decades (see: My Happiness, These Days, On My Mind, Sunsets, Passenger – need we go on?) was unparalleled and he has continued this ethic into his solo career which has spawned hits like Wish You Well, Watch Over Me and Songbird. Last week, Fanning sold out his Perth show at the Astor Theatre, so make sure you don’t miss your chance to see one of the true legends of Australian music.

Undoubtedly the man of the moment when it comes to home grown hip hop, Melbourne bad boy 360 has been riding a wave of popularity lately that, luckily for us, washes up right at the main stage of our very own North West Festival. Just look at the stats: a Top 5 ARIA single and album (Falling and Flying), a 4 times platinum single and 2 times platinum album, two ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Producer, 10 ARIA nominations and three sold out national tours. This is just in the last 12 months. It’s fair to say (and his army of online fans say it all the time) that the man is at the crest of the Australian music industry. The buzz really started to grow for 360 when he released his dancehall/hip-hop/indie crossover hit Boys Like You – which featured guest vocals from indie darling Gossling. The song, which detailed a compromised relationship with the opposite sex as well as an unstoppable flow, hit a nerve with the listening public that sent it to the top of the charts and resonating through huge venues all over the country. When combined with other hits like Killer, Child and Just Got Started, 360 is more than ready to get things going in August this year. Hands in the air!

One of the most enduring and much loved outfits in Australian music is the mighty Grinspoon or Grinners to their friend and fans. Since they made a blistering start to their careers by exploding onto the music scene with their classic debut album Guide To Better Living, Grinspoon have moved from strength to strength in a career littered with undeniable rock anthems. Think about it; Lost Control, Ready 1, Hard Act To Follow, Champion and the list goes on. Touring now on the back of their latest effort Black Rabbits, a record that has proved that Phil, Pat, Kris and Joe are only getting better with time – the boys who were Unearthed all those years ago in Lismore have made a habit of proving the doubters wrong. There shouldn’t be any such doubters in the North West Festival audience though – at least there won’t be by the time Grinners wind up. So let your hair down, raise your goblet of rock and get loose with the all conquering Grinspoon.

All the way from New Zealand to the North West, The Black Seeds are bringing their quixotic concoction of funk, soul, Afrobeat, and dub/reggae foundations to our shores – defying us to leave the inhibitions at home and roll out those dancing shoes. The release of the latest album Dust and Dirt marked an exciting new chapter for The Black Seeds, with their genius

being recognized the world over. Debuting at number 1 on the New Zealand charts, the record led none other than the Rolling Stone to dub the Wellington based playmakers (who count Flight of the Conchords Bret McKenzie as a former member – before he got too busy winning Oscars for Muppet songs) as “one of the best reggae acts in the world right now”. That’s a big claim for sure, but one that is completely justified when you get wrapped up in the Black Seeds’ heavy, heavy grooves and infectiously funky bass lines. We’re more than stoked to welcome this troupe of good lookin’, great soundin’ Kiwis to our humble festival this year!

When it comes to getting the party started, to whipping the crowd into a frenzy, to getting those hands in the air – 360 is your man. Running a very close second are Bluejuice. Actually come to think of it, we’ll call it a tie. We’re sure the lads won’t mind us making this comparison – especially with the reputation that they’ve forged over the last decade or for good times as loose as they are infectious. So to speak. Riding high on a wave of hit singles from their latest record Company including the massive Act Yr Age, as well as On My Own, both of which sit with classics Vitriol and Broken Leg in a cannon of tunes capable of infecting your head, your heart and your dancing shoes respectively. As a live entity, Bluejuice are nigh on unstoppable, ramping up their energy and antics to an almost fanatical level – and they’ll be doing just that at this years North West Festival. No need to act your age with Bluejuice!

Nobody puts Abbe May in a corner. Previously known for her smoky vocals and guitar heroics on hits like Design Desire, Mammalian Locomotion and Hawaiian Disease, as well as her previous incarnation as the all powerful front woman for Bunbury’s own rock Gods The Fuzz, Abbe May has done what only she can do in taking a complete 180 turn on her latest album Kiss My Apocalypse. Full of dirty, sexy synths and grinding drum machines, the new Abbe comes wielding hammer blows like triple j staples Karmageddon, T.R.O.U.B.L.E and the latest fire starter Sex Tourettes. That voice is still there – that unmistakably sultry, hurricane wrapped inside a set of pipes – but set up against this futuristic bed of instrumental chaos it really comes into its own. Produced by long time collaborator Sam Ford, Kiss My Apocalypse is yet another piece in the ever changing, always surprising puzzle that is Abbe May and it’s with great pleasure that we welcome her to the North West Festival this year. You might not know what to expect, but you can always rely on Abbe to provide something sensational.

When an artist like Vance Joy appears people take notice. Gifted with a voice with the potential to silence stadiums and songwriting chops to match, the young Melbourne singer has been sending waves all over the country of late – culminating in a spot on our very own North West Festival. Vance’s debut single, the stunning Riptide was swooped on after a successful showcase at this years famous SXSW Festival, has since been downloaded over 20,000 times and earned a spot at the top of the influential Hype Machine chart. His EP, God Loves You When You’re Dancing then saw him pack out shows all over the country including an unprecedented run of four sold out nights at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club. Tours with Of Monsters And Men and Julia Stone followed and he’ll be coming to us in the middle of a run with fellow North West Festival alumni Bernard Fanning. Already having achieved so much, this is just the beginning for Vance Joy – make sure you see him before the rest of the world!

So that’s your incredible line up for 2013. Plus, we’ll again be running our Best of the North West band competition where one unsigned local act will play the first notes of the festival. Details on the band competition will be announced in the months to come.

Location

Port Hedland is one of the key towns in the Pilbara region of WA and boasts the largest tonnage export port in the world. Considered the centre of the Pilbara, Port Hedland is pivotal to delivering benefits to the economic position of our fair state and country. The awareness and growth of the town is growing exponentially due to the sheer quantity of resources exported from the Port.

The region features stunning natural landscapes with a primary colour palette of red, blue and gold. This truly unique town is synonymous with its red dirt, a border of ocean and stunning native flora.

The town boasts a long history with the original inhabitants, the Karriyarra people naming the area Marapikurrinya, for the hand shaped formation of creeks off the natural harbour. Indigenous rock art can be explored, and the town offers a wide range of leisure activities including fishing, whale watching and observation of the annual protected flatback turtle nesting.

One of WA’s most stunning national parks, Karijini is very close by, as is Millstream National Park. Tourism destinations such as Broome are a mere half-day drive away. Port Hedland features an international airport and is a short flight from Perth and South East Asia.

Camping

We’re pleased to announce that we will be offering camping facilities to those keen to head to the event from towns outside Port Hedland. We encourage you to bring a swag or tent, pull up a patch and take advantage of the toilet and shower facilities on offer.

We’re also very happy to advise that camping is included in the ticket price. More information on what is on offer and the conditions associated with camping at the festival will be available on our website in the coming weeks.

Please note that those who do camp will not be able to move their vehicles from the camp grounds until 6AM the following morning. More details will be available upon ticket purchase.

Accommodation

For those out of towners, we strongly advise you to take advantage of the free camping facilities on offer as accommodation in Port Hedland, as you may be aware, is extremely tight. However, if you do wish to investigate this option, we suggest heading here http://www.accommodationporthedland.com (.)

Don’t know if you guys watch 60 Minutes but it’s pretty much our stay-in Sunday night couch time guilty pleasure. Last night saw the amazingly talented and one of the world’s most revered artists (who happens to be on the West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots line-up), Robert Plant being interviewed. A spankingly good interview too, may we add.

We suggest you stretch out your Sunday, pretend it’s still couch time and watch it here.

It’s good. Real good.

Till our next ramble,

WOOO MOOO! Groovin’ The Moo, Bunbury is on sale NOW!

Don’t hide it, we know you’re as excited as us. It’s the last one for us for the festival season and it’s the show that always sells out (since its birth into festival-land); which means only one thing, it’s a damn good reason to party!

No doubt that we’ll be kick dancing to this track by YACHT.

Last week’s pre-sale went through the roof – five times higher than last year – and if you were one of those early birds, we thank you for your support for all things music loving and all things fun. You are the smart ones getting in early and avoiding our whole Laneway situation last week. Please refer to our Facebook page for the devastation (is that a word?) it caused. Props to you!

GTM 2013 tickets can be purchased at all the usual Moshtix outlets or online.

We’re told it was at Bluesfest back in 1996 when a young Ben Harper begged to be introduced to his idol, the great and legendary Charlie Musselwhite. Over the years their friendship developed into a close musical bond and now, at the request of Ben, the harmonica master will join him for a very special performance at West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots this year.

Time to get to know Mr Musselwhite!

The Mississippi born, Memphis raised, self claimed Native American is a legend in his own right and is one of the most respected blues musicians in the world.

For someone who didn’t realise he was building a career for himself as a teen hanging out with blues old-timers like Furry Lewis, Will Shade and Gus Cannon, it has certainly paid off having released over 30 albums and guesting on countless others including Tom Waits, The Blind Boys of Alabama and the unlikeliest of collaborations with INXS on “Suicide Blonde”. His legendary career made him no stranger to awards and induction into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2010.

Musselwhite believes the key to his musical success was finding a style where he could express himself; having said, “I only know one tune, and I play it faster or slower, or I change the key, but it’s just the one tune I’ve ever played in my life. It’s all I know.”

Don’t miss him play with the talented Ben Harper. The amalgamation of the two storied careers is not only rare but a pleasure to witness live at this year’s West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots Festival.

Sun’s coming up on a pure gold Groovin’ The Moo!

Come the April/May cusp, GTM is looking forward to sharing some of the freshest sonic produce from favourite home-grown acts to international imports when returning to its much loved four regional towns as well as the Nation’s capital.

From Flume, Tame Impala, The Temper Trap and Seth Sentry to Example (UK), The Kooks (UK), Tegan and Sara (CAN) and The Bronx (USA), the GTM community of 75,000 from across the country are in for a premium shindig.

Just one year shy of celebrating its 10th birthday and with a history of sell-out events, in 2013 GTM’s five shows will again be ready to cater for all ages (16+ recommended). In the market fresh words of GTM Promoter Stephen Halpin,

“After six months of planning, it’s always an exciting time when the GTM line-up is finally revealed. Again we’ve assembled a great bunch of exciting new acts and festival favourites. We’re very excited to be hosting They Might Be Giants’ first visit to Australia in a long while.”

With over 26 artists set to feature on the GTM double outdoor stages and in the Moolin Rouge big top tent, the festival will also again provide local food stalls abundant with fresh produce of the culinary variety and markets filled with knick knacks, licensed bar facilities, slingshot rides and chill out areas which all collide together to complete a premium recipe.

In the wise words of Will Rogers, “An onion can make people cry but there’s never been a vegetable that can make people laugh.”

Time to get to know our latest additions.

The Music Maker Blues Revue comes to us this year courtesy of the Music Maker Foundation, an organisation that are fighting in the good fight to keep the blues and southern roots music alive and pay homage to some of the lesser known, but no less talented blues musicians of America. After truly moving, humbling and beautiful performances over the years at our East Coast counterpart Bluesfest, 2013 is the year that the Revue is being taken on the road for the first time. Featuring Boogie Woogie legend Ironing Board Sam, guitar slinging siren Pat Wilder, Alabama bluesman Dr. Burt and zydeco giant Major Handy, with Albert White, Nashid Abdul Khaaliq and Ardie Dean, the Music Makers Blues Revue is a must see event at this year’s festival.

Far too often, true musical pioneers become forgotten heroes and the music they played such a part in creating is forgotten along with them. With your help, we can rectify this at West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots this year.

One of Australia’s most unique and enduring success stories, Russell Morris has transformed himself from a sixties psychedelic king to a seasoned performer over several decades on the stage. First rising to prominence as the voice, face and personality behind the Molly Meldrum produced masterpiece “The Real Thing”, Morris has become a stalwart of Australian music. “The Real Thing” itself caused a sensation upon release, challenging radio programmers’ preconceptions on the length and longevity of a hit single. With Morris behind it though, the track took off, and reached number 1 in America and Australia. Since that initial storm, Morris has had a string of hits including the incredible “Hush” and the classic ballad “Wings of an Eagle”. Don’t miss this Australian treasure at West Coast Blues n’ Roots this year, showcasing his brilliant new album, Sharkmouth.

Comprised of brothers James and Matt Grim, with drummer Stephen Devlin and Dominic Lindus on double bass, Brothers Grim specialise in a blend of rockabilly and blues with elements of rock, metal and punk thrown in for good measure. The boys have been spreading their wares for longer than you’d think, with 15 years notched up in the music scene under various names, but it wasn’t until 2007 when their band the Blue Murders were established, that things started to really get into gear. With their electrifying, lustful and often humorous live performances, Brothers Grim have fashioned themselves into a well-loved fixture of the Australian music scene that never disappoint or fail to get their audience up and dancing.

One of the country’s fastest rising new bands, Sydneysiders Sticky Fingers are making their debut appearance at West Coast Blues n’ Roots in 2013, but we’re sure it won’t be the last time you’ll see them on a big stage. Triple j listeners and punters alike fell in love with these lads and their energetic blues rock after the release of their killer single “Caress Your Soul” – a track which recently landed Sticky Fingers at number 61 in the prestigious Hottest 100 countdown. Their latest track “Clouds And Cream” is another slice of infectious, hookier than hell songsmithery which is helping them sell out venues all over the country and score slots on some killer festivals.
