EXCITING SOUTHBOUND COMPETITION AND EXTRAS

It’s three weeks until the sixth annual Southbound kicks off in style. And we have some more very exciting initiatives to announce, including EcoBound, the Southbound Photography Competition, the winner of the Sonicbids entry, the winner of the Southbound Sculpture Competition, info on our nifty new My Southbound Website & 3G Phone Application plus details of the mighty fine program in the Sunrise Cinema in Basecamp.

ECOBOUND

Southbound is extremely proud of its environmental record as WA’s greenest major festival! But we’re always dedicated to expanding on our EcoBound commitments, under the banner of our SE Earth program.

So we are proud to say Southbound 2010 will be the cleanest and greenest yet.

As you’d already know, we have added a compulsory Green Fee of $3 onto every Southbound ticket sale this year. This goes some way to contributing to the cost of a massive array of initiatives listed below, as well as helping us achieve our goal of carbon minimisation.

Here are some of the projects you’ll see unfolding around you at Southbound:

Car Pooling - This year Sunset Events has teamed up with FestivalBudi, part of the world’s most successful carpooling scheme. In a first for an Australian musical festival, people travelling to this year’s event will be able to use the FestivalBudi website to find someone to share their drive with. The scheme has proved hugely successful in Europe, with festivals like Glastonbury having used the scheme for several years, and we hope you like it too.

To get onboard, save some money and reduce your environmental impact, simply click HERE and register for free. Once you've registered you can start searching for people leaving from nearby and make arrangements to carpool. Don't forget to read the safety tips.

Carbon Reduction – Southbound has a policy aimed at carbon minimisation which means that the carbon impact of the festival is calculated and carbon credits purchased to offset emissions.  Sunset has partnered with GreenSense to audit the festival’s carbon footprint and Carbon Conscious to purchase credits. As a result, mallee eucalypt trees will be planted in the Australian wheatbelt to offset the carbon emissions resulting from Southbound 2010. Over its growing life, the mallee eucalypt will ‘sequester’ or store carbon from the atmosphere, creating ‘carbon sinks’ that offset the effects of greenhouse gas emissions.  The trees are planted on less productive agricultural land, are native to Australia and will help reduce salinity and wind erosion on farms whilst contributing to the fight against climate change. Tree per Ticket – For every Southbound ticket sold, the festival plants one tree. Sunset has partnered with Greening Australia for this project, with an aim to promote biodiversity and re-establishing native plants in the Gondwana Link (stretching from Margaret River to Kalgoorlie). This exciting program creates a living window and helps threatened animal species in their fight for survival. You can find out more HERE and we’ll keep you updated on progress on this program after the festival.

Recycling Stations – Southbound has dedicated recycling stations strategically positioned around the festivals to capture the various waste streams.

Composting – the biodegradable waste from the Southbound Festival is composted offsite and returned to the shire as fertiliser donations to schools and parks.

Green Money – patrons are encouraged to collect recyclables and in return they receive a $5 Green Money voucher to spend anywhere at the festival.

Green Team – Southbound has a team of paid staff and volunteers who carry out the environmental initiatives we have implemented at the festival and educate our patrons. Keep an eye out for them and help join the fight against landfill.

Eco Stalls – the festival provides a free platform for various environmental organisations to  promote their messages.

Packaging Policy – the festival has strict packaging policies for stallholders whereby stalls are only permitted to serve food in biodegradable packaging
These initiatives and more have seen Southbound and the West Coast Blues ’n’ Roots Festival awarded the prestigious A Greener Festival award for the last two years. www.agreenerfestival.com

SONICBIDS

In exciting news, Sydney’s CAMERAS have been selected from the massive list of Sonicbids entries to play at Southbound. Conflicting yet cohesive, CAMERAS offer a distinctive two-sided sound. With two songwriters sharing lead vocal duties, the trio intertwine a dizzying intensity with a haunting atmosphere. Epically sound-tracking the sweeping landscapes of your emotions, while remaining infectious enough to dance your legs off to on a Saturday night, CAMERAS are one of the most intriguing, artistic and unique bands in Australia. Little wonder their star continues to ascend.

Sunset and ARTRAGE are please to announce the winner of the SE Arts Sculpture Commission.

ARTBOUND SCULPTURE COMPETITION

Congratulations to Paul Caporn for the winning sculpture submission The Golden Age. Playing on the image of change seen in the Perth City Skyline, The Golden Age is an exciting and impressive work. ARTRAGE and Sunset Events, through its new SE Arts (Sunset Events Arts) not-for-profit arts division, joined forces to establish this exciting new arts commission project offering $10,000 to a WA artist to design and produce a unique, large-scale sculpture that will become the iconic centrepiece for Sunset Events’ summer festival season, including Southbound, Laneway and the West Coast Blues ’n’ Roots Festival. The Golden Age will be unveiled at Southbound.

MY SOUTHBOUND PROGRAM WEBSITE AND 3G PHONE APPLICATION

Southbound truly goes online this year. Wasteful paper programs are out and the My Southbound Website & 3G Phone Application is in! My Southbound will be your portal to the happenings at Southbound. Customise your own timetable, view maps and playtimes, read band biographies and up-to-the-minute news and generally keep up with everything Southbound has to offer. We’re putting the finishing touches on My Southbound as we write and will let you know more shortly.

SUNRISE CINEMA

Want to experience some extraordinary independent films from around the globe? Well, you can…and all from the comfort of Base Camp. This year the cinema is going indoors and cosy with new running times starting at 10pm and winding up at dawn.

Catch WA’s latest comedy flick Stone Bros: a riotous road trip movie that journeys across the outback and beyond dragging along a local cast of crazies. Dead End Drive In is a classic Ozploitation movie from 1986 – they don’t make flicks like this anymore. Genius Party is truly an animation revolution - seven short stories by seven Japanese anime masters. Enter the incredible world of VHS with Ghetto Video. Wholphin is a very cool online DVD short film magazine full of amazing unseen things presented entirely for your viewing pleasure. The astonishing work of Blu mixes street art with animation and is guaranteed to blow your mind forever. The Call of Cthulhu is an old dark tale penned by gothic storyteller HP Lovecraft and has been bought to life on the silver screen as a tribute to the silent film era. And presenting for the first time in the cinema’s history we bring you a special live music performance with a visual accompaniment from the one and only, dirty disco electro magnate Tomas Ford who will be in your face and pushing your buttons with his unique style of musical mayhem.

All these cool films and music plus random prizes all packed into three nights at Sunrise Cinema. Now if that don’t shake your coconuts you can always just go to bed!
